We have a very simple ethos: to give something back to the community, while having fun and building friendships. We’ve been doing this since the Currie and Balerno Round Table was founded in 1974.
As a group we meet twice a month, once as a business meeting to discuss the running of the club and to review donations and once as a social event. Social events can range from a low-key pub quiz to brewery outings, Pub Crawls over the Pentlands, Rugby and Football trips to comedy shows.
The club is open to anyone from 18 upwards, male or female. The only thing we ask is that you are committed to helping the community and want to get involved in club that has a fantastic reputation.
Currie, Balerno and District Round Table is a local community organisation and is not part of and does not represent the National Association of Round Tables.
If you have any questions, give us a shout on the Contact us page.
Our healthy membership has allowed us to think up new and fun ways to support the community and to raise funds for good causes.
A long-standing favourite is our Santa Sleigh, bringing Santa’s smile (and sweets) to the local area in the run-up to Christmas each year. Many of our tablers remember running out with expectation to see Santa when they were a wee boy or girl, and those of us with families in the community are delighted to continue this tradition.
Another favourite is the annual Currie Fireworks display. This is organised completely by CBDRT. All financial support is through donation and sponsorship, and the event relies on volunteers to make it happen. Our long standing partnership with the pyrotechnic company Pyromancers allows us to provide an excellent show for our community. In recent years, this show was the second largest in Midlothian, second only to the central Edinburgh District Council funded display.
We also run the Currie Beer and Curry Festival, a community event where guests can sample the best of Scottish craft brewing, along with a tasty curry and some live music. Of course, we also sell wine and soft drinks, so everyone (over 18!) is welcome. At the 2014 Beer Festival, which was a sell-out, there were over 34 beers to try, and everyone had a great time. Why not volunteer to help one evening at the 2015 Beer Festival – and keep the other evening free for beer-sampling!
If you would like to come along to any of these events, just drop us a line using the ‘Get Involved’ tab. All adults are welcome – come along, with no obligation, to see what we do!
If you’d like to find out more about us, what we do, and how to get involved, please get in touch. We’re always keen to share our work with anyone who is interested, and are always on the lookout for new members. Membership is open to anyone over the age of 18 who shares our passion for combining fun and community fundraising. If you’re wondering about joining, and not sure if it’s right for you, we can answer your questions – or come along to a couple of our events or meetings, and see how it goes!
