Cheque for CHAS and Round Table Update
May 21, 2023A £2000 cheque was presented to Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) by the Round Table. Zhenya Dove attended our April meeting to collect the cheque. CHAS provides amazing family support for babies, children and young people with life shortening conditions. Our donation has funded 25 families to go to Capital Sci Fi Con - which is a sci fi, film and comic convention run by CHAS and its volunteers. We were delighted to hear that the donation has been spent on tickets, support workers and special transport and everyone had a great day out. The event itself raised £34,512 which was donated directly to CHAS.
ROUND TABLE UPDATE By the time this edition of the C&B News hits the shelves, the Currie Beer and Currie Festival will be ready to open its doors (Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd June), with all the beers settled and tapped. Preparations have kept members of the Round Table busy over the past month, however there has still been time for social events too. We took a self-guided tour of the Leith Tap Rooms: Campervan, Moonwake, Newbarns, Innis & Gunn were amongst the beers sampled. We met up for our annual vinyl (records) night. We started a ‘curry club’ with our first night out to Rustom Restaurant at Haymarket, which we highly recommend. And our Chairperson, Laurence Aitken, has also been busy rehearsing and performing in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Festival Theatre, which several of us went to see. Laurence Aitken and Karen Wilson visited Harmeny School to see the building of the new Learning Hub that we donated to earlier in the year. (photo attached) We held our AGM in April, and the roles of chair, vice chair, treasurer, charities lead, social, comms and IT have been agreed for another year. 2022/23 has seen several new members joining up, and it’s great to have new people and new ideas. Charity donations included support to the Currie and District Flower Show to help expand the range of schools involved (watch out for the extra competition this year..!) The next event on our calendar is ‘Over the Hill’, where we will be attempting to walk over the Pentlands for a convivial evening at The Steading, and for those still standing there is the walk home! We’re always keen to welcome new members. Please do get in touch if you are interested in joining our friendly local group. We are also looking for people to help dismantle the beer festival. If anyone could spare a few hours on the morning of Sunday 4th June, it would be much appreciated.
